Pedal power has paid off for Witney teenager William Macke after he was selected to take part in the track cycling at the UK School Games in Wales later this year.
The 14-year-old, from Wood Green School, will represent the England Central team at the Newport velodrome from Thursday, September 3 to Sunday, September 6.
Macke will be part of a cycling team which consists of four boys and three girls, who will compete in nine events.
They will battle it out against youngsters from 12 other teams from the UK in the sprint, keirin, timetrial, team sprint, scratch, points race, individual pursuit, madison and team pursuit.
Macke has been cycling with Palmer Park in Reading for around five years, and is also a member of Witney Mountain Bike Club.
For the last six months he has benefitted from having a personal cycling coach, which has helped him produce some impressive results.
Cycling is just one of ten sports featured at the Games, which will play host to more than 1,500 children.
The Games are aimed at giving the country’s best young sportsmen experience of what it’s like to be in the spotlight while competing at a national level.
It’s hoped this will boost their development and help them progress to the next level.
He is in the boys’ sabre side along with Soji Aiyenuro, Curtis Miller and Henry Walker.
They form part of a 24-strong boys and girls England team, who will battle it out against Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
