Henley Hawks drew with Rugby Lions for the second time in National 3 South this season after Danny Wells’s late penalty made it 26-26 at Dry Leas.

The match at Webb Ellis Road in December had ended 20-20 with Lions’ James Hawken levelling thanks to a late penalty, and this was an equally entertaining affair.

Centre Wells had the chance to win it with a penalty from inside his own half, but this went just wide in the following wind.

Henley, who climbed to sixth, looked set for a comfortable win after racing into a 12-3 lead.

Hawken’s penalty put Rugby ahead, but Hawks hit back with Neil Baggett’s tenth try of the season, converted by Wells, who then went over on the wing.

Lions reduced the arrears with No 8 Stuart Riding driving over and Hawken converting.

Henley lock Steve Green was denied a try due to a forward pass, but Wells and Hawken kicked a penalty apiece before the break.

The lead changed hands five times in the second half. Two penalties from Hawken, either side of one from Wells, put Rugby 19-18 up.

Henley had lock Dave Clements sin-binned, but flanker Stean Williams robbed Riding of the ball following a five-metre line-out and drove over.

Williams was yellow-carded soon afterwards, and eventually Rugby’s Oxfordshire centre Matt Goode broke the stretched defence to score, Hawken converting.

Wells then had the final say with his third penalty.
