Fuming Patto blasts Foster

Last year's player-of-the-year Luke Foster was torn off a strip by Oxford United boss Darren Patterson after last night's 2-0 defeat at Wrexham.

Foster was sent off after just 11 minutes at the Racecourse Ground and although they battled with ten men for the remaining hour and 20 minutes, the U's fell to goals from Steve Evans and their former striker Jefferson Louis.

Patterson said: "I'm furious with Luke. It's been coming, his performances haven't been good enough.

"He's a great lad, he got double player-of-the-year last season and he thinks he is right now.

"He's gone away from what he's good at, and that's defending it properly - good discipline, heading it, kicking it, passing it simple."

"For whatever reason, it seems to have gone to his head and we need to get him back to what he was."

Louis gave the U's back line a tough time, and Patterson couldn't help but be impressed by the 6ft 2in centre forward, who began his career with Thame United - even if he did have a penalty saved by U's keeper Jake Cole.

"If Jefferson can play like that, consistently, he wouldn't be at this level," Patterson added. I thought he was a handful for us all night, and fair play to him."

It was Oxford's third defeat in their first four Blue Square Premier games, and the second away game in succession that they had to play a long time with ten men. At Barrow, James Clarke was sent off in the first half.

The U's fought back well in the second half and James Constable and Lewis Haldane had chances to equalise, before Louis sealed Wrexham's victory in injury time.

Patterson couldn't fault his ten men for their effort.

"Considering the sending-off was so early, we were excellent, really," he said. "The spirit, determination, fitness - I thought we passed the ball well and we're creating chances.

"If you're doing that against ten men, against one of the better teams in this league, then you're going to have one hell of a chance.

"There was Lewis's free-kick, and then when Lewis had it blocked as well. We were down to ten men but were forcing the issue, which was positive, and great for me to see."

United skipper Adam Murray said: "There's no excuses for the sending-off, it was a poor mistake."

"If we can't keep ten men on the pitch we aren't going to win football matches."

Patterson said: "At the end I've told Luke exactly what I was thinking, but I've told the rest of them they were excellent."

  • The defeat meant United still have yet to win at the Racecourse Ground and the U's have not won a match on Setanta TV in ten attempts.

Three defeats before the end of August - hardly promotion stats them. I'd give Patterson until the end of September to sort this out.

Still think a 'reality check' is necessary: there's too many associated with OU who are living in the past. e.g. Rhoades-Brown's comment on the radio after Saturday's win. "So now we've played two clubs that've come up from non-league. "
The Conference IS non-league and needs (good) players and management who recognise the fact, rather than ones who think they're an unluckily misplaced league side!

They were excellent? Well I need to go back to Specsavers for a refund then! The only thing which was excellent was the effort! But to win matches you need effort and talent. Sadly the talent bit we have very little of.

If that is all Darren is asking from his players then we will be no better than mid table.

Seems to me Foster is being made a scapegoat, yes he should not have got himself sent off but is it his fault that we were so poor against Weymouth Barrow and Eastbourne no we have been appalling in all four games so far this season and this is down to Patterson!

I am not part of the Anti Patto brigade(Yet), but it is painfully obvious to all that the squad is paper thin.

There is no competition for places, no subs good enough to change a game and no goals in the team, The keepers we have at the moment are terrible, we never should have let Tardiff leave, We have a bunch of lightweight ex league players with the attitude that they are too good for the conference and we are seriously lacking at least 2 players with guts and a bit of steel. We need a couple of hard nut case types who will battle.

And the last thing we need is a Manager who will recognise the problems and do something about it rather than making excuses and being ridiculously over optimistic.

The excuses about players being out, sent off and not finishing are just not good enough.

I would have more respect for Patterson if he was to just say we have not been good enough and I will be doing X Y Z to put it right.

I think Patto was spot on. its very difficult to know exactly well the team is doing when we keep on getting players sent off!

A poorly quoted (I hope) article and some rather negative responses...

It is early days, and with his limited budget, the manager will be looking to strengthen his squad. Having a small squad now makes this much easier.
Oxfords performances seem to depend on the number of players on the pitch, and the manager can hardly be blamed for that at this stage of the season, particularly as supporters would attack him if he had left those players out, even if the team was winning.

I'm sure that many words will be spoken, work will done done on the training field and where possible a new face or two (or three) will appear.

What an utter shambles that game was. Are defence looked liked it couldnt defend against a sunday league team. Are midfield had no shape and when ever got the ball the were just playing long ball stuff which ment that yemi and constable had no chance of winning the ball in the air. We have got to many big time charlies in our team who think they are bigger and better than oxford United for example LUKE FOSTER. Barry quin should hang up his boots now i now that he has got experiance but he looked nakerd after an hour. Yemi, constable and deering where the only players to come out of that game with a bit of class and it looks like that we can only score goals when we are against amature sides or we have jamie guy in the side. PATTO OUT NOW BEFORE WE GET INTO REAL TROUBLE. BRING BACK IAN ATKINS.

What a bunch of pathetic idiots!
Because of oxfords downfall over the last years, is it any wonder why i have gone off the game and concentrated on motorsports which is good value for money!
Sack the lot of them!!!!!!!!!
I feel sorry for you loyal fans that go to this pathetic team week in and week out!
I hope you all get a 110% refund for your season tickets!

I'm sure he's quaking in his boots, what with the huge say you obviously have over running the club.

Our main problem remains lack of goal-scoring potency. Constable had a great chance and didn't even hit the target, Yemi continues to frustrate me with his inconsistency. For those who think Yemi played well, watch the game again and see how many times there is no end product from him. There was a moment in the game that was not commented on by Setanta, which was where Yemi made it to the by-line and Constable was steaming in on goal. If Yemi had played it in at the right time I reckon it was a nailed-on goal. Anyway...

It's all very well blaming defence and midfield, but unless we are scaring them up front the pressure builds and builds. You have to make teams worry about conceding goals, or they feel free to play their game. We are not worrying teams enough at the moment.

We are missing three extremely important players right now in all three areas of the pitch - Guy is our star player and a true in-form striker, Trainer is a very attacking midfielder and Turley is desperately needed to get the defence organised again.

Let's get these three key men back, return Yemi to his rightful place as super-sub , then we'll see how good (or not) we really are.

The performances do not depend on whether we have 10 or 11 players on the pitch. We are useless with 10 or 11 players.

I'm sure many words will be spoken but they go in one ear and out the other. It seems to me that they don't train or with a football anyhow.

Granted Oxford haven't really played well yet, but you can't tell anything yet Wrexham will probably get promoted with the highest ever total if they can hold on to their players so no shame there and obviously bad starts but then a win so early doors yet but Oxford's problem in this division is that they they think they are a league club they not, buying ex quality league players is not going to get you promoted you need to buy big horrible non-league giants with a couple decent wingers who can whip the ball in, strong spine, quick wingers and a little bit of organisation will get you points in this league, if Patto was to go though getting one of the long standing non league managers i.e. Clough would be a good shout but I hope oxford at least give him till Christmas no rash premiership style sackings.

One major lapse of discipline cost the team another away game sending off. The forwards still can't score against good teams. Forget Eastbourne, they are a part time team. The way the manager talked is as thought we had beaten a league team. It took a midfielder & defender to give the team a respectful score. The ownwers need to look at what is going on. The lack of ambition on their part clearly shows through. Please for the sake of the loyal supporters replan from the base and bring in some strength in depth.

Personally I don't think Wrexham are that good, watched them last week and York made them look very ordinary and then last night we made them look very good. I would be shocked if they are runaway leaders.

It's pathetic how Yellows fans have been reduced to clutching at straws so early in the season. 3 defeats out of 4 are no fluke, it's a very, very poor start and no amount of polishing from optimistic die-hards can buff up a shine on that particular turd.

Merry, Smith and Patto have steered us from one embarrassing defeat to another - Histon, Droylesden, Weymouth, Barrow to name but a few - these are league defeats we are taking which will be etched on our record for all time. Sadly such results are just commonplace now.

"We passed the ball well" said Darren, well i was sat 40 yards from him and obviously hadnt used the same optician for my glasses, i wonder where he gets those rose tinted one's because as long as he wears them he wont put things right. I will agree there was a lot of effort from the 10 men but not a lot of Footballing skill from us, Wrexham are not a good side but they do pass to each other and do have players that can run WITH the ball and distribute it well and in Louis they have a player that can hold the ball up well and lay it off with vision, qualities that we sadly lack. Darren and Chris williams (on the website) said Murray had a good game, yes i agree he ran himself ragged but his passing and distribution were very poor and i think the armband is effecting his performance badly, Jake Cole proved what a good shot stopper he is but lacks communication with his defenders, Quinny again showed he is not a central defender, Day proved he shouldnt be in the team and Luke Foster??? What is with him, even last season his positioning was often poor meaning he had to result to rash challenges and he proved nothing has changed there altho he isnt the player he was last season and finally, when the players next turn up for training will someone PLEASE remember to take a ball along because they obviously dont practice with one at present, its football for gods sake not circuits and fitness training. Practice with that round thing for heavens sake! It might not come as so much of a surprise on match day when the Ref brings one on if they practice with one.

A man with vision and the ability to express it, what a shame the Chairman, Board, Manager and Players cant do likewise. On the "Major Lapse of discipline" the players and Foster in particular need to really look at themselves, you wont get away with this, i know the fans chanted "Sunday League Ref" but he was the man in charge and his interpretation of the rules counts as he so aptly proved, yes he wasnt very good but Setanta has clearly shown what happened better than from where us Oxford fans were sat and a sending off it clearly was mainly due to his (Fosters) poor positioning. We need the team to be as astute as the supporter i quote.

I'm not worried, one terrible mistake cost us the game but we looked good in the 2nd half. Attacking with passion 10 men got caught on the break. I can see enough quality in this team to be in the top 5 at the end of the season. We're getting our bad run out of the way nice and early. Keep the faith!

Dave you are too used to failure, its because we accept it, turn up and applaud them off the pitch that they are not improving and i am as guilty as you appear to be. Yes it was 10 men, who's fault was that? Yes we created chances but failure to take them results in draws or defeats! Wrexham are a very good team ? NO they are not altho they are better than we are, they held the ball up well, distributed it to their own players with ease and took 2 of their chances! All things we failed to do and the result proves it. Unless our play in these areas improves the results wont, but imagine if we do improve how good we could be because you are right in so much as we are creating more chances!
