Yemi Odubade may have played his last game for Oxford United.

Last year's supporters' player-of-the-year was left out of the 16-man squad that won 1-0 at Stafford Rangers on Saturday after being transfer-listed by boss Darren Patterson.

And Patterson says it would be better for all concerned if Odubade found another club - not least because, as one of United's highest wage-earners, he could probably get two players in to replace the former Eastbourne Borough striker.

But if the 23-year-old, who signed a new two-year contract with Oxford last summer, isn't snapped up, maybe it will give him a "kick up the backside" to get back into the team, says the boss.

Speaking after the U's victory at Marston Road, Patterson said: "The confidence has gone with Yemi, but I'm a big believer that you make your own confidence.

"You can say your confidence is low, but that's a cop-out.

"I've got a good relationship with the boy, and I think the best thing for him and us is that we go our separate ways.

"Financially as well, I think people should know he's drawing a massive amount of my budget, and obviously he's here next year.

"I need to look at it every way. If he goes, I might be able to get some more bodies in from now until the end of the season to hopefully improve us.

"I need to get people in and, in all fairness, I've got to look at the bigger earners here."

It's not necessarily the end for Odubade.

The way Matt Day has bounced back after he was placed on the transfer list shows that the door doesn't necessarily close completely.

"We're trying to help Matty with a lot of things on the physical side, but he's responded very well, and that's what we're after," said Patterson.

"If Yemi doesn't go, maybe that gives him the kick up the backside and he comes back into the team."

UNITED youngsters Ben Weedon and Matty Taylor have joined Cirencester Town on work experience to gain match practice.
