CITY of Oxford excelled on the open water regional and national stage, recording their best ever results.

The club took home five medals from the Swim England South East Regional Championships.

This resulted in six of the seven squad members qualifying for the National Open Water Championships, with Nicole Ryan winning silver.

It built on just the one regional champion and national qualifier from the previous year.

At the regionals, Dotty Goodgame won the 17/18 age group 5k event, with George Rudd, 16, also crowned champion over the same distance.

Meg Smit, 15, and Gretel Goodgame, 14, took silvers in the 3k race, while Freddie Wilkinson clinched bronze in the 17/18 age group 5k.

Maddie Powell, 15, was fifth in the 3k.

The club’s success was then followed up at the nationals, with Ryan winning silver in the 5k open category event.

Oxford’s swimmers also enjoyed success at the British Summer Championships at Ponds Forge.

David Murphy set an Oxfordshire and North Buckinghamshire record to win silver in the 19 Over 100m breaststroke, before equalling the best county 50m time.

Ryan is also a record holder after clinching bronze in the 19 and over women’s 1,500m freestyle, before also setting a new mark in the 800m event.

Illazane Pinfold sent more times tumbling when finishing third in the 13/15 age group 50m breaststroke.

Smit also got in on the act, breaking the record for the 1,500m freestyle.

The success did not stop there, with gold medals for Nick Skelton (15 age group 200m IM and backstroke), Billy Wooton (15 age group 200m breaststroke), Callum Smart (17/18 age group 200m breaststroke) and Mimi Morley-Iszatt (15 age group 50m backstroke).

Nick Skelton (15 age group 100m backstroke) and Toby Mackay-Champion (19 over 200m breaststroke) winning silver.

Witney swimmers were also in action in Sheffield, with Eleanor Perks leading the way.

The 13-year-old finished seventh in her age group 200m breaststroke.

She also came 18th overall in the 100m breaststroke.

Clubmate Ellie Browne, 16, was 15th in her age group 200m breaststroke.

Witney’s Maddie Good competed in the 16yrs 5k Open water swim, coming 23rd.

At Swansea, Ella Edwards, 15, and Jessica Miller, 13, raced in the Swim Wales National meet.

Edwards competed in five events, achieving fifth place in the 100m butterfly and sixth in the 200m butterfly.

She also made it into the top-12 in three events.

Miller competed in five strokes, securing four top-12 placings.
