NATHAN Douglas saved his best effort until last to qualify for Sunday's triple jump final at the European Athletics Championships.

The Oxford City AC member produced a season's best of 16.56m in Berlin to earn his place in the top 12.

Six-time British outdoor champion Douglas's first attempt of 16.22 left him towards the bottom of the Group B leaderboard in today's qualifying round.

The 35-year-old's cause was not helped when his second jump was a foul.

But Douglas, a silver medallist in 2006, held his nerve to produce the goods on his third and final attempt.

The leap placed him fourth in Group B and eighth overall to reach the final.
