THREE Blackbird Leys ABC fighters won medals at the popular East Midlands Box Cup at Grantham, Lincolnshire

Pride of place went to Farham Karim, who fought High Wycombe’s Al Long in the 48-50kg final.

The unbeaten youngster showed his class, constantly catching his opponent with his southpaw jab and making his opponent miss.

However, it was a close fight and he only won the gold medal on a split decision.

His clubmate Kiel Merritt was not so lucky when he took on Hoddesdon’s Alfie Gaskin in the 52-54kg final

In his third contest of the weekend, Merritt put up a great display against his more experienced opponent, but lost on a unanimous decision and had to settle for silver.

Blackbirds’ third medallist was Ajay Desmond, who fought Jack Ross of Wayne Elcocks Boxing Academy in the 54-57kg final.

In a bout that could have gone either way, Desmond lost on a split decision and so took silver.

There was no joy for clubmate Joe Gaul, who was beaten in the quarter-finals of the 57-60kg category, while Ivor Price lost a split decision in the semi-final.

Blackbird’s only senior on show was Daniel Robinson, who suffered a decisive defeat in the 60-64kg

semi-final, having won his

quarter-final the previous day.
