KARL Robinson rued Oxford United switching off from their ‘perfect game plan' as one of his former players struck a late winner for Wigan Athletic.

Will Grigg, who played for the U’s boss at Milton Keynes Dons, scored in the 86th minute to undo a sweat-soaked performance from the visitors.

It was clear from the opening exchanges the visitors’ approach was going to be defensive – and it worked.

A repeat of the 7-0 scoreline in December’s reverse fixture never looked on the cards and, as time wore on and frustration set in for the Latics, United’s optimism they could even take more than a precious point out of the game grew.

But that was their undoing, according to a frustrated Robinson.

He said: “Our game plan was perfect, we had three opportunities to score and didn’t take them.

“Then, when we turned into an under 23 team – losing our shape – we get picked off. It’s simple football.

“I don’t think it was a case of being exhausted, the problem with the game was we looked like we were going to get the goal.

“With that we lost discipline. But we’re a young team and we’re learning.

“I’m pleased the team could come here and carry out a game plan like that, but we’ve got nothing – that is the most important thing.

“But I don’t think we’ve lost face here. What was it before, 7-0?

“At no stage did it look like we were going to lose by a goal tonight.”

Robinson left four senior players at home to rest up for Saturday’s Sky Bet League One trip to Doncaster Rovers, which has grown in importance.

Rochdale’s draw with Oldham Athletic last night saw United’s cushion over the relegation zone trimmed to four points with three games remaining.

Canice Carroll was among those to come into the side, starting in midfield before moving up front for a spell.

The teenager enjoyed being a nuisance to the Latics back four, but felt he had a chance to become the match-winner with an effort which was blocked.

He said: “It was a great performance, all the lads put in a great shift and it was unlucky to concede the goal.

“I know myself I should have at least scored one. It’s just something we’ve got to take into Saturday.

“I love getting in amongst people and annoying people.

“That was my job today and I think I did that.”
