OXFORD United legends were among 140 guests who gathered to celebrate Les Robinson’s career at a glittering sportsman’s dinner.

Robinson said he was “overwhelmed” by the level of support on the night.

The dinner was part of a series of events to mark Robinson’s testimonial honouring his decade of service to the U’s.

Only five players have made more appearances for United than the popular full-back, who featured 458 times after signing in 1990.

He was joined by former United players Jim Magilton, Dean Windass, James Constable, Darren Purse and Joey Beauchamp at the Principle Oxford Spires Hotel on the Abingdon Road.

New United manager Karl Robinson, assistant coach Derek Fazackerley and former chairman Darryl Eales were also among the guests.

Les Robinson, said: “It was a fantastic night and superb to see so many old friends, the support from everyone was overwhelming.

Oxford United is such a special club and nights like that demonstrate what brilliant fans it has.

“I’m so grateful to my old team mates for coming and for so many supporters making the effort to come too. I’m so proud of my time at Oxford and it means so much to me.”

Guests were treated to an after-dinner speech by Windass, while Magilton hailed Robinson as “the best right back in the country” in a glowing tribute to his former teammate.

While Beauchamp said at various times United felt “invincible” at the Manor.

An auction saw supporters snap up ‘United Experiences’ including playing in the defender’s testimonial match against a Liverpool Legends XI and the chance to be the assistant manager.

The night was organised by Robinson’s testimonial committee, consisting of United fans Andrew Brockbank, Stuart Crook and former U’s managing director Greig Box Turnbull.

Liverpool are one of only two clubs Robinson did not play against during his career and he will now get his chance – 18 years after leaving United.

The match will take place at the Kassam Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7 (2pm).

Players including John Durnin, Paul Walsh and Mark Wright have pledged to turn out.

Tickets are on sale now from the Oxford United ticket office at £10 for adults, £5 for U18s and £1 for U7s.

Hospitality and sponsorship packages are also available.
