MICHAEL Appleton has been named as the early favourite for the Oxford United job by bookmakers.

Pep Clotet was sacked this morning after 205 days in charge and his predecessor is leading the betting market as his replacement.

The 42-year-old would be a hugely popular appointment with supporters after enjoying three years at the club, leading them to automatic promotion from Sky Bet League Two in 2016 before leaving last summer.

While it is difficult to believe he would return having settled in as assistant head coach at Leicester City, who have climbed to seventh in the Premier League, Appleton is the early 5/1 favourite with betting site Oddschecker.

Also featuring highly so far are caretaker boss Derek Fazakerley (7/1), Alan Stubbs (10/1), Billy Davies (10/1) and Brian McDermott (12/1).

United have given no indication over when they hope to appoint a successor to Clotet.

Of the names floated so far, who would you like to see take over?
