NIAMH McGuckin claimed her second major title within a month when competing in the National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs (formerly NABC) finals in Gateshead.
The Berinsfield ABC boxer, who triumphed at the Senior Development Championships in November, made the long trip worthwhile with a convincing victory in the 54kg final.
The 19-year-old faced the experienced southpaw Bethany Connellan, from Hammer ABC, in an all-action contest.
McGuckin started strongly, landing some heavy backhands and damaging Connellan’s eye and cheekbone.
Connellan still came out for the second round with all guns blazing, but the fleet-footed McGuckin landed the more effective punches to take the round.
For the third and final round, Connellan knew her only chance was to stop the Berinsfield fighter to win the fight.
However, McGuckin again proved elusive and landed the more
eye-catching punches, to win convincingly and collect her fourth national title – her second as a senior.
