CAMERON Tweedle confirmed his status as one of the country’s top young yachtsmen by retaining the British Finn Association Travellers Trophy.

The 18-year-old, from Carterton, claimed this cup, which has been won by numerous future Olympic sailors since its inception in 1963.

Open to competitors in the men’s heavyweight Olympic class, the Trophy is decided on the accumulated scores of all seven Open regattas.

Having gained wins at Weymouth and Alton, a second place in the last event at Warsash was enough to land the title.

Thanks to the support of his sponsors, Oxfordshire-based Maylarch Environmental Ltd and Dash-CAE alongside the RAF Benevolent Fund, he has also competed at events in Europe, while cementing his place at the top of the UK Finn under 23 squad.

Tweedle, who started racing at the age of eight at Oxford Sailing Club’s Farmoor Reservoir, said: “It’s been a really hard, long season this year, combining the UK events with racing on the international circuit.

“While the squad focus is most definitely on world and European championships competition, it feels fantastic to have had the consistency to win such a prestigious prize.

“Although this is the end of the UK season, there’s never really any break, as I’m pushing for a place in the British Olympic team.”
