CARLOS Sainz impressed on his debut for the Enstone-based Renault team with a seventh-placed finish in the United States Grand Prix.

The Spaniard, who replaced Jolyon Palmer, qualified eighth and overtook Force India’s Sergio Perez with six laps remaining in Austin.

Teammate Nico Hulkenberg retired after three laps.

Felipe Massa picked up two points for Grove-based Williams, when finishing ninth.

Lance Stroll, despite starting 15th, was 11th.

Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen were 12th and 17th respectively for the Banbury-prepared Haas team.

Lewis Hamilton edged nearer to the title in claiming victory and helping Mercedes clinch the constructors’ championship.
