TONY Bradford is recovering in hospital after suffering a heart attack, which cut short the Greene King Oxford & District League’s finals night.

The 83-year-old was partnering son Rob in the final of the Parent & Child event.

Quick-thinking from his fellow players helped keep Bradford alive, before paramedics arrived at the Kassam Stadium.

After working on him for an hour, he was stabilised and taken to hospital – and is said to be on the road to recovery.

Tony and Rob Bradford, from the Black Prince, had been a leg to the good against clubmates Carl and Robert Edgington.

In the second leg, however, Tony had scored two and was mid-throw when suffering the heart attack.

The decision was quickly taken to abandon the remaining matches.

A mini presentation night, as well as the remaining games, will now be held at the Gladiators Club on November 3, from 8pm.

Earlier in the evening, Swan A’s Jon Townsend made history, when beating Kevin Baker, of Gladiators A, 2-1 in the Oxford Singles final.

He joined brothers Barry and Geoff in winning the trophy – the first time three siblings have done so.

Townsend won the opener on three sticks after it was tied 2-2, before Baker, looking for his first win at the sixth attempt, set up a deciding leg.

But the Swan A player set five and clinched victory.

Donnington C’s Josh Breakspear beat Steve Jessup, of Littlemore British Legion, 2-1 in the Ted Houghton singles.

Jessup comfortably won the opener when chasing two, before Breakspear took the second on three sticks after it was tied 3-3.

The Donnington player then whipped off a six in the decider and his opponent replied by hitting the first five dolls, only to narrowly miss with his last stick.

Gladiators C retained the Greene King Cup, when beating Swan A 2-0.

Anchor man Keith Powell needed all six to win the first leg for the latter, but he was off target with his final effort as it was tied 23-23.

Gladiators went onto win the three-stick shoot-out, with a set of 13.

Despite a six from Terry Stuart, Swan could only manage 22 in the second leg and their target was passed with a player to spare.

Donnington C were denied a league and cup double as they lost 2-1 against Littlemore British Legion.

The victors set and won the opener 17-15 in the Jim Whitbread Cup, before Donnington snatched the second 19-18.

Legion clinched the decider 20-18.

It was a repeat result in the Oxford Fours, with Littlemore triumphing 2-0 in leg scores of 10-5, 9-8.

In the Lower Pairs final, Donnington C’s Steve Greenough and Breakspear beat Ian Sharp and Dave Edwards, of the Fox & Goat, 2-0.

Masons’ Liam Costar was crowned the Under 21’s winner after Catherine Wheel’s Max Dybalski did not attend.

The Oxford Pairs and Monty Greenaway Fours were abandoned as a result of Bradford’s heart attack and will be played next month.

Entrance will be free on the night and teams are being asked to send at least one representative to collect their trophies.
