CHRISTIAN Ribeiro felt Oxford United and Charlton Athletic showed the best of what Sky Bet League One has to offer as they drew 1-1 at the Kassam Stadium.

The full back earned the point for the hosts with a terrific strike before half-time.

It got them back on level terms after Tarique Fosu had profited from a defensive mistake to open the scoring for the Addicks.

Both sides, who stayed in the top-six, contributed to an entertaining game, where the result was in doubt until the final seconds.

Neither side could muster a killer blow, but the football on display impressed Ribeiro.

He said: “Both teams were having a go and we left it all out there.

“I thought it was a really good advert for League One.

“Charlton were probably the best team I’ve played against this season and I wouldn’t be surprised if they finished in the top-two.

“It was two really good teams there and we’ve got loads more to improve on, so we’re just getting started.”

Ribeiro’s goal was surprising – not just because he had not scored in 18 months, but also for the quality of the left-footed finish on the volley.

The defender admitted he was getting plenty of stick about it from his teammates.

“Everyone keeps asking me ‘have you ever scored a goal as good as that’,” he said. “You’ve just got to have a bit of faith in me!

“That left foot is normally for standing on, but now and again when I have to I’ll swing it.

“To be honest it just dropped out of the air and I just hit it. Thankfully it nestled in the corner.”

The only cagey moments came late on and U’s boss Pep Clotet admitted that on the back of three successive victories, his natural instincts to go all out for a late winner were tempered.

He said: “As a manager, I like it when the game’s open and you try to go for a win.

“But we were coming from really good results and it’s very good to get that point.

“We could have won, but we could have lost as well, so it makes the point really fair.”
