JAMES Bolton has been crowned the Mota-vation Series men’s champion, but it was far from simple for the Woodstock Harrier.

The veteran 40 runner needed to win the finale in Oxford to claim the crown – and did so in an exciting race.

Abingdon’s Jack Shayler took an early lead, with former Oxford City runner Steve Kimber, Radley’s Alex Miell-Ingram and Banbury’s Gregor Kelling close behind.

But Bolton led a large pack five seconds adrift at the three-quarter mile stage and was seventh on the return journey.

However, he produced a brilliant comeback, gaining 12 seconds to beat Kimber and claim his first victory of the series.

Bolton finished on equal points with Les Newell, of Oxford City, but clinched the title on head-to-head as his rival, who would have only needed to cross in the top four, was unable race through injury.

City’s Julian Richardson clinched the veteran 50 crown when finishing 12th overall, while Bicester’s Ben West crossed 13th to land the under 19 prize.

Diane Moore, of Headington, cruised to her fourth win of the series to retain the ladies’ championship, with Hook Norton’s Donna Allen defending her senior title.

Oxford City and Headington retained their respective men’s and ladies’ team championships.

l RADLEY’S Ella Lovibond clinched bronze in the girls hammer at the School Games National Finals in Loughborough.

Representing the Midlands, she set a personal best of 54.36m.

l BROTHER and sister David and Fiona Bunn excelled in the trials for the Junior Home International Mountain Running Championships in Sedbergh, Cumbria.

Fiona won the under 20 women’s event, securing qualification to represent England in Peebles on September 16, while David finished 18th in the under 17 boys category.

l ABINGDON’S Jeanette Ashton won silver in the veteran 60 heptathlon at the British Masters Throws Championships in Sheffield.

Pete Stepney and Marc Juffkins took decathlon bronze in the veteran 50 and veteran 40 categories respectively.
