WOODMAN were crowned Section 1 champions after beating fellow title contenders Three Pigeons 3-0 in the Greene King Oxford & District League.

In a week which included 19 sixes, Neil Lyon’s 16 doll-haul (6-5-5) was in vain as the home side lost 29-25, 28-25, 29-28.

The third proved nervy as Woodman only hit ten with their first four players.

But Jeff Glenister’s six triggered a recovery, before anchor man Mark Rollins, who hit 15 (5-5-5), clanged off the five needed to claim maximum points.

Kevin Giles whipped off 16 (6-4-6) as Premier Section champions Gladiators A came from behind to win 2-1 at Garsington Sports A.

They hit the highest total score of the season – 95 – as they triumphed in leg scores of 29-31, 33-25, 33-26.

Barry Townsend hit 15 (6-4-5), Chris Jenkins 14 (4-6-4) and Andy Beal 13 (3-6-4) to assist Gladiators’ haul.

Darren Cox was top-scorer for Garsington with 13 (6-2-5).

Steve Bayless and Kevin Stuart, who clanged off 16 (5-5-6), hit sixes as the last two players in the final leg as Red Lion A Yarnton earned a 3-0 win over George A.

Having been set 27, they needed 12 to claim victory and the duo duly obliged.

Mark Revill’s haul of 16 (6-5-5) helped Swan B beat New Club A 2-1.

Dick Walsh top-scored with 15 (5-6-4), but could not prevent Swan A losing 3-0 at Black Prince.

Three teams are still in the hunt for the Section 2 title.

Bullnose Morris A boosted their hopes with a 3-0 win over Six Bells A Quarry.

But Chequers C dropped a valuable point at home in beating Vikings A 2-1.

Six Bells D succumbed to a fifth consecutive defeat as Gladiators B triumphed 3-0, for whom Martin Giles (4-4-4) and Chris Webb (3-5-4) both hit 12.

Steve Walton’s 14-doll haul (5-5-4) was to no avail as Donnington Club A lost 3-0 to Black Horse.

Section 3 leaders Chequers A suffered a setback when falling to a 2-1 defeat at home to White House.

They levelled the match, but fell apart to lose the decider 18-13.

Donnington Club C landed the Section 4 title after beating Littlemore British Legion 2-1, securing the one point they needed in the first leg.

In Section 5, Seacourt Bridge hold a one-point lead after a 3-0 victory over Cricketers Littleworth.

But Bullnose Morris B are hot on their heels as they claimed maximum points in beating Cricketers A.

Six Bells B Quarry strengthened their Section 6 title hopes and ended Florence Park’s bid as they beat their fellow challengers 3-0.

Gavin Lovett clanged off a six as Bells won in leg scores of 16-10, 17-15, 14-12.

Second-placed Vikings Sports C’s title hopes took a huge dent as they lost 2-1 at Black Horse B.

They started well when winning the first leg but fell to pieces, scoring just six and nine as Black Horse, for whom Nick Edmonds Senior top-scored with 13 (5-4-4), eased to victory.

It turned into a long night for Kidlington Football Club and Northway B in Division 7.

The first two legs had to be decided on three sticks after they were tied 5-5 and 10-10.

Kidlington won them both and completed the whitewash when claiming the third 17-15.

Black Horse A turned up at Catherine Wheel A with only six players, but still won 2-1 in a close contest.

Golden Ball are celebrating after landing the Section 8 title in a 2-1 victory over Kings Arms.

They captured the crown when winning the first two legs, before the hosts denied them maximum points.

All final result cards must be received by Monday, September 11. If any cards are late, the result will be declared void.

SWAN A’s Jon Townsend will face five-times runner-up Kevin Baker, of Gladiators A, for the Oxford Singles title after a dramatic night at Littlemore British Legion.

Townsend beat Woodman’s Geoff Glenister 2-0 in the last-eight, but endured a nervy semi-final against Steve Walton, of Donnington Club A.

With the deciding leg tied 2-2, they could not be separated on three-sticks, before Townsend took it on one-stick to reach the final for the first time.

Baker beat Mick Berry, of Swan A, 2-1 to set up a last-four tie with Black Prince’s Rob Bradford.

He won the opener, but was taken to a three-stick shoot-out in the second.

However, Bradford blobbed, leaving Baker needing just one doll to book his place in the final.
