AFTER Marvin Johnson proved his physical fitness in training this week, Oxford United boss Pep Clotet wants to see that the winger has his mind on the game.

The 26-year-old has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer and missed last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe United with a hamstring problem.

With a week of the transfer window remaining, United may still have to fight off interest, but Johnson is expected to be ready to play against Shrewsbury Town this weekend.

Clotet said: “Marvin will be available.

“Obviously we have to see how he’s been training and analyse how the players performed last Saturday.

“A player puts himself on the pitch or off it with his own training and performances.”

The only question mark is whether the speculation has affected Johnson’s mental prepar- ations.

Clotet confirmed Hull City’s bid, turned down earlier this month, is still the only official approach.

And he urged the in-demand star, whose contract still has at least two seasons remaining, to put everything to one side and focus on impressing for United.

He said: “It’s difficult for me to assess because I’m not in his head.

“I understand he’s a professional player and they know that to go somewhere it’s up to clubs to get together and agree.

“If they don’t get to this agreement you have to keep working hard and earn your opportunities.

“He’s in the situation now that he was so happy to come to Oxford and he has to honour his contract until we decide we want to let him go. It’s as simple as that.

“For me he’s an important player and is not for sale.

“He has to focus 100 per cent on showing how good a player he is and working hard to get the respect of everyone in the league.”
