JACK Brooks celebrated in style after marking his seasonal debut for Yorkshire with a maiden first-class century in the Roses Match against Lancashire at Old Trafford yesterday

The former Oxfordshire player, better known as a fast bowler, advanced from 94 overnight to 109 not out as the visitors declared their first innings on 448-8.

The 32-year-old, a popular figure on the county circuit , who was returning after a calf injury, kissed the White Rose badge on his helmet and punched the air after flicking his 146th ball to short fine-leg off Simon Kerrigan.

Brooks had lost Jack Leaning – his partner in a record Roses eighth-wicket stand of 165 – for 118 to Tom Bailey five balls into the day before he picked off the six runs he needed in singles.

He then slog-swept Kerrigan over mid-wicket for his fifth six immediately before the declaration.

He hit five fixes and seven fours in his 155-ball innings.

Then, the seamer was handed the new ball in place of in-form Ben

Coad.

It was a decision which reaped reward when Lancashire’s England opener Haseeb Hameed played down the wrong line and was bowled by Brooks to leave the hosts at 1-1 in the fourth over.

However Yorkshire’s bowlers were then frustrated as former West Indian Test player

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who made 116 as Lancashire finished the day on 264-6.
