OXFORD City caretaker-manager Mark Jones has used his side’s recent lay-off as an opportunity to shake up his squad.

City return to action in Vanarama National League South tomorrow with a trip to Wealdstone, having had a fortnight to reflect on a disappointing 4-0 defeat at Welling United in their last league outing.

Goalkeeper Tyrell Belford, who signed for City in November to replace departing loanee Jack Stevens, has signed for Vanarama National League North side Nuneaton Town after being allowed to leave.

He will be replaced by youngster Craig Hill, who steps up from Oxford City Nomads, while winger Shaun MacAuley has been loaned to Kingstonian, freeing up space in the squad to bring in new additions.

Jones said: “We wanted to add some more energy and quality to the squad.

“When you’re working with a very small squad it’s not always easy to make the changes you want.

“I felt we needed to freshen things up a little and the players need a boost.”

The arrival of striker Kaiman Anderson on loan from Shrewsbury Town this week should provide that.

The 19-year-old has scored 18 times this season while on loan at Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side Halesowen Town, with City winning the race to secure his services until the end of the season.

“We did well to get him, because a lot of National League North clubs were interested in him,” said Jones.

“We have a good relationship with his agent and that’s what helped us get the deal done.”

Anderson said: “I’m really happy to be joining until the end of the season.

“I’m very impressed with the whole set-up and the facilities and can’t wait to get started and score some goals.”

Jones is also hopeful of securing the signing of another forward in time for tomorrow’s clash in a bid to bolster his side’s attacking options.

City were held to a goalless draw at home to Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division side Thame United in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night, eventually scraping through on penalties.

However, one bright spot was the form of some of City’s youngest stars, with midfielder Sami Khawaja rewarded with a call-up to the first team squad this weekend.

“He’s a very clever player and I have high hopes for him,” said Jones.

“We want to work with young players who have a drive to improve and Sami fits the bill perfectly.

“We’re building a young, hungry group and I think he fits right in with that.”
