OXFORD Hawks paid for missed chances as they went down 2-0 away to South League Premier Division 1 leaders Bromley & Beckenham.

Despite the result, this was an encouraging display from the visitors, who looked dangerous in open play, but could not convert.

Ted Bennett hit a post with a gilt-edged chance for Hawks in a goalless first half, while keeper Chris Price made a great save at the other end.

Bromley took the lead from a needlessly conceded short corner, and after Dan Rhodes had missed a great chance to level, added a second ten minutes from time.

Despite forcing three penalty corners, there was no joy for Hawks, who entertain National Premier side Brooklands, from Manchester, in the National Cup quarter-finals on Sunday (1pm).

Dan Bleach scored his 100th goal for Oxford in their 6-3 victory at Wycombe in Regional Division 1 Bleach netted in each half, as did Sean Cox, while the visitors’ other goals came from Matt Mckeown and Niall Devaney.

Witney went top of Middlesex, Berks, Bucks & Oxon Division 1, thanks to a 5-1 win away to South Berkshire.

Ben Wells was the star with a hat-trick, while Witney’s other goals came from Ryan Fitz-John and Ben Moss.

Witney take over from Newbury & Thatcham 2nd, who drew at Bicester.

The visitors dominated the first half, but solid play from Bicester’s defence of Stu Goodacre, CJ Birtles and Daniel Round, plus goalkeeper Nathan Elliott, kept the scoreline goalless.

Newbury took the lead midway through the second half, but Birtles equalised at the far post from a short corner.

The result dropped Newbury to second place, with Bicester close behind in third.

l OXFORD Ladies lost 4-1 at home to Banbury in South Clubs League Division 2, their only goal coming from Christy Barnard.

  • FORMER Oxford University captain Dan Fox won the UK player-of the-year award chosen by members of the Hockey Writers’ Club.

Fox announced his international retirement after competing in his second Olympic Games, where the 33-year-old reinforced his reputation as a fearless penalty corner runner and a strong defender, despite Great Britain finishing a disappointing ninth.
Fox, who lined up for England 101 times and for Great Britain 63 times, said: “I am very flattered to win.

"It is a great honour and something I didn’t really expect.”
