OXFORD United are concerned Aaron Martin will miss the rest of the season after suffering what they think is a snapped Achilles tendon in the Emirates FA Cup replay against Macclesfield Town.

The centre back slipped just over a minute into the 3-0 win at the Kassam Stadium and was taken straight to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

U’s striker Wes Thomas was struck down by the same injury last month and head coach Michael Appleton believes Martin, 27, will also be wiped out for the remainder of the campaign.

He said: “It looks like he’s snapped his Achilles.

“The medical staff are convinced and if that is the case then it’s him out for the season, absolutely.

“I’m gutted for him because he’s worked so hard to get into a position where he was pushing Chey (Dunkley), Charlie (Raglan) and Curtis (Nelson) really strongly to get in the starting line-up.

“For that to happen after his last couple of performances is a real shame.”

Martin, who signed a two-year contract in June after leaving Coventry City, has made 11 appearances for United this season.
