EDDIE Pepperell fired a stunning seven-under-par 64 to secure a share of second place after the opening round of the Portugal Masters.
The Abingdon golfer, who needs a good performance to retain his European Tour card for next season, got off to a bad start with a bogey five at the first.
But birdies at the second, fourth and eighth saw him climb up the leaderboard, only for a bogey five at the ninth to halt his momentum.
However, Pepperell then hit four birdies and an eagle at the next five holes to tie for the lead.
He ended with four pars and lies just one shot behind Marc Warren going into tomorrow’s second round.
Pepperell tees off at 8.20 from the tenth hole.
