OXFORD City suffered a fifth defeat in six games as ten-man Gosport Borough came away from Marsh Lane with a 2-1 victory.

Despite playing with an extra man for more than an hour following Mike Carter’s dismissal, City were unable to make it count in Vanarama National League South.

Scott Davies headed City into the lead, but Josh Carmichael levelled before the break and Dan Wooden fired home a late winner for the visitors.

Things were looking rosy for the hosts when Gosport were reduced to ten men just before the half-hour mark following a stamp by Carter on Davies.

And seven minutes later it appeared City might cruise to victory, when Davies powerfully headed home Louis Soares’s cross.

But the visitors responded strongly and Carmichael was denied a certain goal by Robbie Cundy’s superb clearance.

However, just a minute later Carmichael brought the visitors level, curling a free-kick around the wall from the edge of the area to sneak in the bottom corner.

City failed to exploit their numerical advantage in the second half as they were unable to break down a stingy Gosport defence.

And they paid the price 13 minutes from time when a simple ball across goal found Wooden unmarked in the box to fire home the winner.
