KANE Hemmings hopes his next goal will count for something after the striker again scored in defeat for Oxford United.

The summer signing fired the visitors in front on 16 minutes at Bramall Lane, reacting fastest to convert the rebound after Liam Sercombe’s shot was parried.

But the U’s were unable to build on the platform and Sheffield United seized the initiative, going on to win 2-1.

Hemmings was left with a sense of déjà vu, with his other goal for the club coming in a defeat by the same scoreline at Bristol Rovers.

He said: “There’s nothing worse than scoring when it doesn’t mean anything.

“I suppose it’s good from my personal point of view, but it’s not about yourself, is it?

“It’s about the team and hopefully there are more goals to come in winning performances.”

He added: “We should have taken more initiative from the goal and pressed again to try and get another.

“No disrespect to Sheffield United, but before the game they were vulnerable.

“Sitting back and giving them an incentive to come on to us was perfect for them.”

While the finish appeared simple, Hemmings admitted for a moment he thought he had fluffed his lines.

He said: “I thought I was going to miss. It bounced up high off the goalie and I thought ‘this could go anywhere’.”

“When those ones come out you’ve seen them missed a thousand times.

“You think back to Tyler (Roberts) a few weeks ago at Bristol Rovers, they’re not easy chances to take.”
