AARON Burgess held off a late challenge from James Bolton to win the penultimate round of the Mota-vation Series at Combe and clinch the men’s title.
The Oxford City athlete claimed his third successive win in the fourth race of the year.
There was little to separate Burgess and Bolton, of Woodstock Harriers, who were given the same time of 22mins 17secs.
City’s Maxwell Robinson led until the halfway mark, but dropped back to third as the runners re-entered the village for the second time.
At that stage, vet 40 athlete Bolton was three seconds down on Burgess, but made a last-ditch attempt to claim victory, finishing within feet of the winner.
City’s men dominated with six runners in the top ten, helping them maintain their commanding lead in the team event.
Tony Lock (Witney) and Phil Kimber (Oxford City) claimed their fourth divisional wins, landed the vet 50 and 70 titles respectively in the process.
Headington’s Diane Moore beat Woodstock’s Sophie Carter, who runs for Belgrave Harriers, by 38 seconds to set up a title-decider for both the ladies’ and vet 35 crown.
City’s Gwyneth Hueter led the way in the vet 55 category, helping her to the age-group title.
The final round is at Oxford on September 1.
