ROGER Goodall is the only previous finalist through to the quarter-finals of the Greene King Oxford & District League singles championship.

And as the New Club hot-shot lost on his only appearance in the final in 2014, there will be a new name on the trophy this year.

To reach the last eight, Goodall beat the in-form George A player James Morrison, who had already accounted for previous winner Den Sellar (Crown).

The last-16 clash went to the deciding leg, which was tied 4-4, Goodall winning 2-1 on three sticks.

Chris Jenkins (Gladiators A) joined Goodall in the quarter-finals with a straightforward 2-0 victory over Liam Purcell, having recorded a high-scoring victory over another George player, Steve Bayliss, in the first round.

Pete Sellar defeated two previous runners-up – Steve Walton (Donnington D) and Andy Beal (Gladiators) – when going through at the Red Lion, Marston.

Adam Baker was the other winner at that venue. Among his victims was Charlie Buckingham (Woodman), who had accounted for defending champion Geoff Townsend (Gladiators) in the first round.

Baker’s third-round win against Keith Powell (Swan A) was on one stick in the final leg.

Rob Bradford (Black Prince) got through without dropping a leg, including a 2-0 success over the fancied Kevin Giles (Gladiators A).

Darren Cox (Florence Park), who also did not drop a leg, hit the only six of the night – against John Greenaway (Swan A) 2-0.

Luke Purcell (George A), who almost went out at the first hurdle against Willy Waite (Bullnose A), won a thriller against Jon Townsend to reach the last eight.

Chasing a set of four, Purcell clanged off five to win the first leg.

Purcell then set four in the second, Townsend responding with a five to level the game.

In the decider, Purcell hit another five which was enough to give him victory.

Pete Rampton made up the last-eight line-up beating both Jonny McMahon (Bullnose A) and Ray Townsend (North Oxford Con Club) 2-0.

LIAM Costar produced the stellar display in the Ted Houghton singles competition for players from Section 4 and lower in the Oxford & District League.

In the second round, the Masons Arms marksman defeated defending champion Yorkie Finney (Blackbird) 2-1.

Finney won the opening leg, but Costar responded in style by whipping off the only six of the night in the second.

He then secured victory by taking the deciding leg 3-2.

Kevin Flynn joined him in the quarterfinals.

After a 2-1 victory in the first round against Dean Plumstead in which two of the legs went to three sticks, Flynn saw off 2014 winner Steve Buckle (Blackbird) 2-0.

Dave Simms (Blackbird) had a lowscoring game against John Flynn Snr (Donnington Club B).

Simms won the first leg and then could only set one in the next leg.

Flynn struggled in reply and only matched the score.

They both blobbed out in the three and one stick and so went back to six sticks. Simms set and won with a score of three.

Phil Hounslow (Red Lion Marston) beat Tom Finney (The Blackbird) in another close contest.

Hounslow set and won the first leg 4-3 and then clinched victory 3-2 in the second.

James Dineen (Blackbird) had to be in top form against Mark Simpson (Donnington Club A) in an early round.

Simpson won the first leg 4-2, but Dineen hit back immediately with a set of five in the next leg, before winning the final leg 4-3.

Dineen then had two comfortable wins to reach the last eight.

Completing the quarter-final line-up are Garry Rees (Blackbird), David Lammin (Florence Park B) and Ian Bowler (Littlemore BL).

None of the last eight have reached the final before.
