ABINGDON Vale teenager Ben Charlesworth has been called up by Oxfordshire for his minor counties debut.

The 15-year-old batsman will play in this weekend’s Unicorns Counties Championship fixture against Devon at Exeter.

Charlesworth has caught the eye of selectors with several good performances in Division 2 of the Cherwell League, as well as for St Edward’s School and Gloucestershire 2nd.

He also shone for South & West of England Under 15s at the Bunbury Festival at Radley College and comes in for Cumnor teenager Jamie Curtis.

There are three other changes from the side which lost by ten wickets to Herefordshire in the Western Division.

Batsman Richard Kaufman, Oxford spinner Harvey Eltham and Aston Rowant seamer Leo Bethell are also recalled.

They replace the unavailable Joe White, Joe Thomas (both on holiday) and Karl Penhale (work).

Captain Luke Ryan is away studying for his MBA, so Jonny Cater again leads the side.

Oxon, last year’s Western Division champions, are still looking for their first win of the season, but batsman Lloyd Sabin says the run of results has not forced a change in mentality.

The 22-year-old said: “The atmosphere over the last few years has been we turn up and play hard cricket, but we enjoy ourselves.

“I don’t think that will differ. We will turn up and have good fun and I am sure we will be alright.”
