MATT Chapman had only raced at Spa on a video game before the weekend, but he marked his first competitive drive at the Belgian circuit with a thrilling victory.

The Oxford teenager won the first race of the Ginetta GT5 Challenge by just 0.027secs, before scoring two further podium finishes at the legendary track.

With only one round remaining at Donington Park on September 10-11, Chapman holds a 14-point advantage over third-placed Ryan Hadfield, but is 151 points behind Ollie Chadwick.

Chapman, who also qualified on pole, revelled in his successful weekend at Spa and a second win of the season.

The 16-year-old said: “We definitely exceeded expectations.

“Thursday’s practice was the first time I’d ever been on the track.

“I’d only ever ‘raced’ at Spa before on the Playstation and they wouldn’t let me test on Wednesday as I’m not 18 yet and there was an age limit.

“We lost some valuable time and experience there, but it didn’t hold me back.”

Starting on pole, the Total Control Racing driver claimed victory by the narrowest of margins in the first race of the day.

And, following a battle with Chadwick, he just missed out on a second win by 0.3secs.

In the final race, the teenager led as it was red-flagged due to an on-track incident, but the officials declared a result from the end of the fourth lap which saw him bumped back a place into second.

Chapman said: “We knew we had a good car and to then qualify on pole was something else.

“Each race was a huge battle with Ollie (Chadwick) and it was incredible to pip him to the win in race one.

“It really has been an amazing weekend and it’s definitely boosted our confidence further for Donington.”

Chipping Norton-based SWR Racing were also in action at Spa in the British Formula 3 Championship.

Thomas Maxwell and Eugene Denyssen recorded season best finishes of seventh and eighth respectively in the third race of the weekend.

The next round is at Snetterton on August 6-7.
