GOALKEEPERS Sam Slocombe and Max Crocombe are set to leave Oxford United after being told they have no future at the club.

The pair have 12 months left on their contracts, but are now in discussions over a settlement to terminate the deals this summer.

The news comes after the signing of Simon Eastwood last week, which took the U’s up to five senior goalkeepers.

Head coach Michael Appleton hinted last month a reorganisation would take place during the close season and has now spoken about it for the first time.

He said: “We’ve had conversations with both players and they know they have the opportunity to go and find another club.

“The club is in discussions about a package for them to leave, so I expect something to be done over the next seven to 14 days.

“The players aren’t daft, they don’t want to be hanging around too long when they know their chances are less than limited.”

The news is unlikely to have come out of the blue for either player.

Appleton released Ryan Clarke last summer to pave the way for Slocombe, but the 28-year-old struggled to convince and lost his place to Benji Buchel.

Crocombe came through the U’s youth set-up, but four years on from signing a first professional contract he has been restricted to only six appearances.

His only two games under Appleton came in Capital One Cup ties when loanee George Long was ineligible.

Despite accumulating experience in loan spells with Nuneaton Town, Barnet and Southport which earned call-ups to the New Zealand senior side, the 22-year-old is also deemed surplus to requirements.
