NATHAN Douglas won his fourth British Championship – his first since 2007 – but admits he might have to do more to book his place in the Great Britain Rio Olympics team, writes STUART WEIR.

And the same is true of Oxford City teammate Hannah England, who could only come fifth in the women’s 1,500m.

Douglas claimed victory with 16.58m, despite fouling on four of his six jumps.

To guarantee selection to Rio, athletes have to finish in the top two at the trials and twice attain the Olympic standard.

Douglas has jumped the qualifying standard only once and although he can be selected without a second jump past 16.85, he is aware it is unlikely he would get picked if he does not do so.

When asked if he thinks he should go, Douglas replied: “I think it will depend on what I jump next weekend as well.

“If I was on the selection panel, I would be thinking: ‘We know Nathan’s history. We know he can win medals. We know he can jump further, but we also know he has had a massive battle with injuries, so if he is healthy and find his rhythm and jump say 16.80, why would we not give him a go?

“The only unfortunate thing is that I am not on the selection panel.”

He added: “It’s nice to be British champion again – it’s been a long time and is always a little sweeter when it is the Olympic trials.

“I’m frustrated I did not get the Olympic qualifier – I wanted to get that here because it was a perfect opportunity.”

England could record only 4mins 14.29secs in her race, coming home a well-beaten fifth behind Laura Muir and Laura Weightman, who secured selection.

There is a third place available, which will see England compete with Charlene Thomas and Jessica Judd among others.

“I am pleased as that is one of my best races of the season and this is the place to deliver it,” England said.

“Obviously I wanted more – a hell of a lot more – but my races haven’t gone well this season and I wasn’t in a great position today, but feel that I have more to come.”

England will consult with her coach before deciding on her next meeting, but knows if she can achieve the qualifying time, she has an outside chance of the final place.
