OXFORD City Stars have swooped to sign one of the most sought-after defenders in the English National Ice Hockey League.

Stars, who play in South Division 1, have secured the services of the in-demand Dominic Hopkins, Streatham’s assistant captain.

The 35-year-old joins Oxford after spending fours years with the Londoners where he earned his reputation as one of the best British defencemen in the division.

Reading-born Hopkins, who played more than 600 games for Basingstoke, Dundee Stars, Guildford, Wightlink and Streatham, has also earned a reputation as a points-scoring defender.

Hopkins, who has averaged over 39 points per season since 2010, said: “Oxford have always had amazing support and the fans are very loud and passionateduring games.

“With the fans being right on top of the action too, it really creates a great atmosphere. I’m excited to play in front of them and help the team to push for some silverware.”

Stars coach Simon Anderson said: “I am obviously delighted to have attracted someone of Dom’s experience to Oxpens Road.

“Dom will bring a massive amount of experience and know-how to our young team.

“It was important for me to try and bring the very best players available to Oxford and I believe that I have brought a top player here.

“Every time I coached against a team with Dom in it, I used to wish he would be on my side and finally it has happened.”
