FRILFORD Heath moved to the top of Section 1 in the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League despite a home defeat to defending champions Burford.

The 2-1 loss saw them leapfrog Oxford City, who were not in action, although the former leaders have two matches in hand.

Frilford’s point came in the opening pairs, where Tim Smith and Lee White edged out Simon Hopkins and John Wilks 2 & 1.

But from then on Burford took control.

The second match also ended on the 17th green, where the visitors’ Sam Tanner and Michael Potts won 2 & 1 against Jon Rusk and Jamie Burns.

The deciding contest was more comfortable for Burford, as Aaron Ashberry and John Lally beat Dean Newbold and Gary Hamilton 4 & 2.

It was only their second win in five matches but moved them to within half a point of Frilford.

Tadmarton Heath ended their wait for a victory in style, whitewashing struggling Feldon Valley.

All the matches were closely-fought, with Owen King and Darren Booker’s 3 & 1 success the most comfortable.

Studley Wood already look well-placed to bounce straight back to the top-flight after surging clear in Section 2.

They made it three wins out of three with a 3-0 home win over Hadden Hill.

Craig Patterson and Paul Avenell provided the biggest margin of victory, shaking hands with Lee Fuller and Mark Grootz on the 15th green for a 4 & 3 success.

Badgemore Park went top of Section 3 with a 2-1 win at home to North Oxford.

WATERSTOCK pair Pat Hingley and professional Paul Bryant are in the field for the regional final of the Lombard Trophy next month.

Amateur Hingley won the club’s qualifying competition with a nett 72 and will now pair up with Bryant, who has been Waterstock’s professional for 22 years.

They will play at Camberley Heath alongside 64 other clubs on June 14.

At stake is a place in the 36-hole final at the Pestana Vila Sol Golf & Hotel resort in Portugal in September.

NEARLY 200 players took part in Frilford Heath's annual Pro-Am, which raised money for captain John Gowing's chosen charity Helping Hearts.

Members Paul Smith, Steve Helliwell and Mark Smith, playing alongside Donnington Valley professional Tom Fleming, won the team prize with a score of 125.

Martin Woodbridge (Wokingham) won the professionals’ competition with an impressive seven-under par round of 65.
