DANNY Hylton will put all thoughts about his future on the back-burner tomorrow in what could be the final competitive game of the forward’s contract at Oxford United.

But the popular 27-year-old joked chairman Darryl Eales’s office would be his first port of call if the U’s are celebrating promotion.

Hylton is one of several first team players whose deals are due to end this summer.

The club made it public several weeks ago that no negotiations would be held until it became clear which division the U’s would be playing in this August.

It was hoped clarity could have been reached with games to spare, but with the campaign going to the wire, some players head into the final game of the regular season unsure of what lies ahead.

Hylton, who has scored 30 goals from 84 starts in his two years at United, is focused on helping to secure a promotion, which would do no harm when talks are started this month.

He said: “I guess if we win it could be the last game. That’s out of my hands.

“You are always aware of your contract situation, I know mine is up at the end of the season.

“I don’t dwell on it too much. You put it to the back of your mind because you have a job to do.

“That’s the main thing, get it done and then we’ll sort it out.

“If we get promoted I’ll go and knock on the chairman’s door straight after the game.”

Hylton has pushed his case for a new deal by finishing the season strongly.

The former Aldershot hitman will be one of the first names on the teamsheet for the crunch clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

But after the reverse fixture at Adams Park his days looked numbered as Michael Appleton left Hylton out of the XI for six successive games.

The head coach said at the time the forward would benefit from a break and while it was not a decision which was welcomed by the player, it seems to have paid off.

He said: “Of course I wanted to play ever game, but it’s the gaffer’s job to make decisions.

“He sees things others might not and he thought it was best I had a rest.

“I wasn’t always happy with that because I wanted to be out there playing, but we have a squad and you have to utilise it.

“Maybe it was the right thing to do because I have felt fresh in the last few weeks.

“Maybe I wouldn’t have if I had been playing in that period.”
