IT WAS a tale of holding your nerve as Barnsley booked their place in the final at Wembley.

After 2-1 victories away to Scunthorpe United and Bradford City, and then a home win over York City by the same score, the Tykes needed shoot-outs to get past Wigan in the northern area semi-final and then Fleetwood in the final.

Here we look at how Barnsley set up a meeting with Oxford United on Sunday...

Scunthorpe Utd 1, Barnsley 2

1st round,

Tuesday, September 1

THERE was little excitement for the disappointing 1,796 crowd after the first hour of this clash.

However, Barnsley eventually forged ahead when Lewin Nyatanga was in the right place to convert George Smith’s cross.

They made it 2-0 when Marley Watkins turned in what boss Lee Johnson called a ‘shin bobbler’.

Charlie Goode pulled one back in injury-time after an error by Nick Townsend, but it could not stop Barnsley from edging through.

Bradford 1, Barnsley 2

2nd round

Tuesday, October 13

SUCCESS at Bradford saw Barnsley progress further in the competition than in five previous attempts.

It prompted boss Johnson to claim: “I’d love to take the team to Wembley and I think we’d take 45,000 fans.”

Barnsley were depleted after inter-national call-ups and injuries, but produced a solid performance to come from behind and claim victory.

After Billy Knott put the hosts ahead, crosses by Conor Hourihane were headed in by Watkins and Alfie Mawson to seal victory.

Barnsley 2, York City 1

Area quarter-final

Tuesday, November 10

BARNSLEY went into the game in a bad state.

They had lost seven matches in a row in the league and had recently been dumped out of the FA Cup by non-league Altrincham.

The Tykes signed Adam Hammill the day before the game following a short trial, and his im-pact was instant.

The visitors took the lead through a superb 30-yard free-kick from former Barnsley forward Michael Coulson just before the break. But when Scott Flinders misjudged a Hammill cross, Ben Pearson levelled.

Hammill then hit a superb winner with six minutes remaining to put Barnsley through and cap a fairytale debut.

Wigan Athletic 2, Barnsley 2 (Barnsley won 4-2 on pens)

Area semi-final

Tuesday, December 5

BARNSLEY had just slipped to the foot of the League One table, but turned the formbook on its head.

Hammill opened the scoring with a superb run and finish just before the break.

Although Will Grigg levelled early in the sec-ond half, Ivan Toney soon restored Barnsley’s advantage with his first goal for the club.

Grigg equalised late on, but with Hourihane, Toney, Sam Winnall and Mawson netting from the spot, Barnsley edged through.

Barnsley 2, Fleetwood 2 (on agg) 1-1 after first leg, Barnsley won 4-2 on penalties

Area final

Thursday, February 4

ASHLEY Fletcher’s goal in the first leg earned Barnsley a vital draw at Fleetwood and set up a nervous second leg at Oakwell.

Hourihane put the Reds in front, but Ash Hunter equalised in the 81st-minute.

Barnsley went behind in the shoot-out when Josh Scowen saw his effort saved.

But Adam Davies turned the game with two superb dives to his right at full-stretch to keep out Fleetwood’s next two penalties.

Hammill then joined Kevin Long, Hourihane and Winnall in scoring from the spot to send the Reds to Wembley.
