Oxford City’s superb run in the FA Trophy came to an end in the third round as they were beaten 1-0 at Woking on Saturday.

It was the second year running City have fallen foul of the Vanarama National League side, who ended City’s Wembley aspirations with Joe Quigley’s strike shortly before half-time.

In another repeat of last year’s defeat, City finished with ten men, after captain Jose Lapoujade was given his marching orders late on when collecting two soft bookings.

It could have finished so differently if City had been able hold out against Woking’s first-half onslaught, aided by a fierce wind.

Debutant Shaun Jeffers went close to giving the home side an early lead after robbing Alejandro-Adrian Santiago of the ball before striking wide.

At the other end, Marlon Jackson blazed over from close range after Bradley Bubb had pulled the ball back from the bye line.

And Bubb could have put City in front against his former side when he raced clean through, but his weak toe-poke was no trouble for goalkeeper Jake Cole.

In the latter stages of the half, the pressure intensified on the City goal as Woking sought to make the most of the advantage afforded them by the conditions.
Quigley beat City keeper Laurie Walker with a low curling effort from outside the area, but his effort was just the wrong side of the post.
However, just minutes later he got the goal he had threatened when Keiran Murtagh found him unmarked in front of goal for a simple finish, despite Walker getting a hand to his effort.
That sparked a bust-up between the City stopper and defender Jon Arzamendi, which left City on the back foot.
They could have been further behind before the break when Jeffers was allowed a free header at the back post from John Goddard’s cross, but he could only find the side-netting.
City were brighter after the break and attempted to mount some pressure of their own
They had to survive an early scare when Goddard headed across the face of goal, with the lurking Jeffers just beaten to it at the back post by Santiago.
But although City’s general play was much improved, they were unable to cause Woking many problems going forward, despite the energetic exertions of substitute James Roberts.
The Oxford United loanee was involved in City’s best chance, chasing down a loose ball and laying it off to Declan Benjamin, who curled a shot wide.
But City were unable to build a head of steam and their hopes of an equaliser were effectively ended nine minutes from time when Lapoujade received his second booking, leaving his side to finish with ten men.
