GARY Dent admitted he did not overly enjoy his moment in the spotlight after landing the unsung hero award.

The Oxford City Stars ice hockey stalwart, involved in the club for more than 30 years, has taken on every role imaginable, and also played a massive role in rescuing the club from some of its darkest days.

When nominated, his contribution was summarised by the statement: “Put simply, without Gary, there wouldn’t be an Oxford City Stars.”

“It’s not just me that’s done this, there are many others involved too,” Dent said.

“I have run junior teams, women’s teams, set up teams and run the men’s sides too – but when you are involved with a club, you do those things. You take responsibility.

“I got involved all those years ago, and when you are deep into something and it goes wrong, like it has done a few times, then you don’t want to see something die so you do all you can to save it and carry on."
