DAVID Murphy smashed older brother Alex’s Oxfordshire & North Bucks county record in the men’s open 100m breaststroke at the ASA South East Region Winter Championship in Portsmouth.

The City of Oxford swimmer stormed to first place in 1min 0.59secs, four seconds ahead of his nearest rival, as well as taking gold in the 50m breaststroke.

Murphy also took silver in the men’s 200m breaststroke in 2.16.84, just behind fellow City swimmer Fabian Whitbread, who won gold in 2.15.06.

Whitbread also took gold in the men’s open 400m individual medley in 4.24.43 and silver in the 200m in 2.04.42.

In the male para-swimming multi-classification events, Chris Currie picked up five gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley.

Emily Wood won the junior 200m breaststroke and bronze in the open category, while Ellie Millington won the 50m butterfly and took silver in the open category.

Emily Nisbet won gold in the female junior 200m butterfly, also taking silver in the open category.

Emily Ford collected three medals, including silver in the junior female 50m butterfly and bronze in the open category, as well as a further bronze medal in the female junior 100m butterfly.

Four swimmers from Abingdon Vale also competed – Yasmin Tajalli, Millie Royal, Nienke Lijzenga and Trudi Wheatley.
