STANFORD in the Vale stunned Saxton Rovers in the first round of the North Berks League’s Charity Shield, beating the Division 1 side 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, writes PHIL ANNETS.

Jamie McGahey netted for visitors Stanford, cancelling out Riley Stone’s goal for the higher-league side.

Abingdon Town also needed penalties to advance past hosts Long Wittenham Athletic, going through 4-3 on spot-kicks after a 2-2 draw.

Lewis Monaghan and Ryan Scott goals for Wittenham were matched by Nathan Williams and an own goal for Abingdon.

Division 1 leaders Berinsfield made short work of Faringdon Town to book their place in the next round, winning 9-1 thanks to a Max Palmer hat-trick, braces from Dave Murphy and Luke Holdsworth and goals by Luke Saunders and Charlie Lee. David Cole hit Faringdon’s consolation.

In Division 1, Dorchester are still searching for their first point after losing 2-1 at home to East Hendred.

Josh Axtell netted their goal, but strikes from Ben Hummel and Mike Farrelly won the game for Hendred.

Hanney United went level on points with Division 2’s leading sides with a 4-2 home win over Steventon.

George Crowley, Adam Pike, Sam Bishop and James Bishop all scored for Hanney, while Luke Williams and Jamie Speer netted for the visitors.
