SOPHIE Carter competed among some of the world’s best in finishing 15th at Sunday’s Morrisons Great South Run in Portsmouth.

Carter, who is from Woodstock, but competes for Belgrave Harriers, completed the ten-mile route in 1hr 6secs.

Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot, who won silver in the 5,000m and bronze in the 10,000m at the London 2012 Olympics, was victorious in 51.17, with Britain’s 10,000m European champion Jo Pavey second in a time of 52.44.

In the elite men and masses race, James Bolton led the way for Woodstock Harriers, crossing 41st, while Brian O’Connor set a personal best of 57.34 to finish 53rd.

Teammate Denise Bridges set a Vet 45 club record by finishing in 1.10.41, while Susan Haines beat the Vet 55 mark with 1.27.47.

Kevin Game, Pete Brackett and Alan Harrison set personal bests.

HEADINGTON Road Runners’ Diane Moore took victory at Sunday’s Candleford Canter Ladies 10k at Fringford, near Bicester.

Moore crossed the line in 39mins 5secs, and with teammates Charlotte Goodall and Zuzana Pearce coming home third and 21st respectively, helped Headington win the team prize.

Alchester’s Claire Court and Olivia Underhill were fourth and ninth, while Samantha Res, of Hook Norton, crossed in tenth.

PAUL Jegou made a solid start to the cross country season by finishing fourth in the first race of the Wessex League at Canford Heath, Dorset.

Raced over five laps, White Horse Harrier Jegou crossed in 30mins 51secs.

CLARE Norrish put in another excellent performance to finish as the second female at the Water of Life half marathon.

Norrish, of White Horse Harriers, came home ninth overall in a time of 1.28.07 in a race that started and finished at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.

THE Oxford Mail Cross Country League returns this weekend.

Runners from across the county will embark upon Ascott-under-Wychwood on Sunday for the first round.

Witney Road Runners are hosting the event, which begins at 9.55am with the under 9 girls and boys race.

The under 20, senior and veteran women’s race over 6,500m starts at 11.20am, while the men’s equivalent over 8,500m begins at 12pm.

The senior men’s defending champion is Oxford City AC’s David Bruce, who clinched last year’s title by ten points from Cirencester’s David Bell.

Eynsham Roadrunners’ Hannah Hale holds the senior ladies crown after edging Oxford City’s Martha Lloyd by a point.

Oxford City A and Headington A are the respective men’s and ladies Division 1 holders.
