Five City of Oxford swimmers helped the South East to an impressive third place at the English Schools Inter-Divisional Championships in Leeds.

David Murphy, 16, set a new South East Region and ESSA record time of 1min 1.82secs as he stormed to victory in the senior boys’ 100m breaststroke.

And then he set a record-breaking 2.18.71 on his way to a gold medal in the 200m breaststroke.

Murphy was also part of the senior boys’ 4x100m team who finished third.

Billy Wootton, 12, won gold in the junior boys’ 100m breaststroke in an ESSA record time of 1.13.86 and also picked up a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke.

Callum Smart won the intermediate boys’ 100m breaststroke, setting an ESSA record of 1.06.19.

The 14-year-old also finished second in the 200m breaststroke and third in the 4x100m medley relay.

Emily Nisbet claimed a bronze medal in the senior girls’ 4x100m freestyle relay and came sixth in the 200m butterfly, while Daniel Jenkins came seventh in the intermediate boys’ 200m freestyle.

l FABIAN Whitbread took home a remarkable 17 gold medals as City of Oxford hosted their annual championships at Leys Pool.

With 17 events for swimmers aged 7-49, the 19-year-old swept the board.

Oliver Conway, ten and Megan Smit, 11, amassed 15 golds apiece, while Freddie Cooke, hauled in 13 golds.

There were 12 gold medals for Ewan Springett and 11 each for Nicholas Skelton and Emily Ford.

Zara Porter, Delphine Little, Ellie Millington and Eleanor McNally took ten gold medals each and 18-year-old Nathaniel Armstrong, returning from a lengthy illness, claimed six victories.
