Jack Taylor is hoping his man-of-the-match performance Saturday’s showpiece final at Lord’s will act as a spur to his ambition of becoming an England Test player.

The 23-year-old off-spinning all-rounder, who started his career with Great & Little Tew, shone with bat and ball to help Gloucestershire beat Surrey by just six runs to win the Royal London One Day Cup.

“This could be a springboard for the county in the years ahead,” added Taylor.”

“I also hope it will help me achieve my ambitions in the game.

“I want to play for England, but know I have a lot of hard work ahead of me to get there.”

Taylor, who played for Oxfordshire as a teenager, hit a rapid 35 off 26 balls including two successive sixes to boost Gloucestershire’s flagging innings.

“With a few overs to go, we were looking at about 240, so I was a bit disappointed to slice a catch to cover,” he said.

In the end, a hat-trick by Jade Dernbach reduced the west country side to 220.

A Gloucestershire win was looking unlikely when Kumar Sangakkara and Rory Burns produced a century third-wicket partnership.

“It was nice to get both of them out,” said Taylor, who finished with 3-43 from his ten overs.

Taylor then had the nerve-wracking experience of taking the catch in the deep off Surrey captain Gareth Batty to win the match with three balls left.

On completing the catch, Taylor was mobbed by his delighted teammates who were winning their first trophy for 11 years.

“I didn’t have much time to think about, but it was a brilliant moment which I will never forget,” he said.

Minutes later, Taylor was on the podium after being announced man-of-the match by former England captain Mike Atherton.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Taylor, who is off to Australia shortly for four months of grade cricket.
