Miles Welch-Hayes, a loan signing from Oxford United, scored on his debut as North Leigh opened their Evo-Stik Southern League campaign with a 2-0 victory at home to Tiverton Town on Saturday.

Welch-Hayes struck 15 minutes into the Division 1 South & West game, with a powerful downward header from a corner to put the Millers ahead.

The hosts launched a series of attacks and in the 31st minute, Callum McNish was fouled by Tiverton keeper Rhys Lovett, who redeemed himself by saving Jamie Cook’s resultant spot-kick.

North Leigh sealed the result with their second goal in the 51st minute.

Morgan Williams broke to the bye-line on the left where he slipped the ball to McNish, who swivelled and crashed a leftfoot shot past the helpless Lovett into the roof of the net.

A second- half double from new signing Conor McDonagh gave Didcot Town a 3-1 victory away to last season’s play-off finalists Larkhall Athletic.

Didcot toik the lead five minutes before the break, when Adam Learoyd volleyed home following Marvin Martin’s free-kick Larkhall were gifted an equaliser when a mix up between Leigh Bedwell and Luke Carnell saw Darren Jefferies head home.

Just after the hour mark, Didcot’s new strike partnership of McDonagh and Mark Janes combined for McDonagh to slot the ball home for his first league goal for the club.

He got his second and sealed the points for Didcot when he beat two defenders looped a shot over past Larkhall keeper Kyle Phillips.

Wantage Town, fielding five debutants, went down 1-0 at home to newly-promoted Slimbridge In an even first half, home keeper Gareth Tucker had to tip one Slimbridge shot over the bar.

The only goal came in the 54th minute, when a free-kick was poorly defended by Wantage and Adam Mace on the left, powered a drive home past Tucker.

Wantage upped the pace and Sam Barder and Piers McGlynn were denied.

Three second-half goals sent Banbury United crashing to a 3-0 defeat at home to Swindon Supermarine Leam Howards and Ricky Johnson went close in the first half for Banbury, who were relegated.

l Former Didcot striker John Mills scored a hat-trick on his debut for Hereford United in their 4-1 success over Dunkirk in the Midland League. Pablo Haysham, who also played for the Railwaymen last season, got their fourth.
