Caroline Campion scuppered Katherine Hawes’s bid for a record-breaking 14th Oxfordshire ladies’ singles title with a scintillating display.

Hawes had the advantage of playing on her home Oxford City & County green as she attempted to extend her own record on finals weekend.

But the reigning champion had no answer to her Banbury Central opponent, who stormed to a 21-6 victory.

Campion completed a double by teaming up with Carole Galletly to pip Hawes and Donna Knight 18-17 in the afternoon’s pairs final.

The Banbury Central duo were going one better than last year.

Campion’s hopes of a title hat-trick were dashed when, together with June Bone, Gill Sharpe and Galletly, she went down 20-16 to Central clubmates Mo Cox, Sue Waring, Annie Gilkes and Anne Norton in the fours.

Hawes triumphed in the triples with Knight and Gail Gilkes, retaining their title with a 35-10 win over clubmates Vicky Harrison, Margaret Stacey and Jacky Gray.

West Witney’s Jazzmin Alder recorded a nail-biting 21-20 victory over City & County’s Katie Glenn in the under 25 singles.

City & County’s Jeanette Berry took the two-wood singles, while the unbadged pairs went to South Oxford’s Maureen De Paauw and Sue Stewart.
