Karl Penhale produced a devastating spell of 6-10 as Banbury shot out Reading for just 40 in a one-sided Division 1 clash at White Post Road on Saturday.

The seamer, who is playing for Northants 2nd XI this season, proved unplayable to set up an eight-wicket win in a match that ended just after lunch.

It was Ashley Blanchard who made the breakthrough, trapping Andrew Rishton lbw for three.

Fellow opener Curran Gaur’s 15-ball duck was ended by a Jimmy Phillips catch off Penhale, while Tom Fray’s nought took 13 balls before he was bowled by Blanchard.

The procession continued with Penhale winning lbw shouts against Sukhmeet Khang and Bobby Zafar.

Only Jack Beaven reached double figures, as Reading lunched on 40-9.

Penhale completed the destruction with the first ball after the resumption, trapping David Harley for the fourth duck of the innings, for final figures of 11-5-10-6.

It’s the second lowest score in Division 1 history.

When Banbury replied, Hugo Darby was run out for four and Lloyd Sabin fell for eight.

But former Australian Test keeper Tim Paine ensured the runs were knocked off in just 6.1 overs with 25 not out from 14 balls.

The result lifts Banbury to third in the table, but 50 points behind leaders Henley.
