WALLINGFORD ruled the roost at the British Masters Championships to lift the Harry Harvey Cup as the most successful club, writes JOHN WIGGINS.

With eight gold medals, three silver and a bronze they were clear winners.

Their women’s crews shone as several of the masters squad came away with multiple gold medals.

Alice Brown, Rachel Edge and Julia Wilkes were in the Masters D quad, who are unbeaten this year, with Christy Job – and with president, Katie Kapernaros, they also took the coxless four event.

Kapernaros, Edge and Brown clearly had the Midas touch as they found themselves in the heart of the victorious women’s C eight.

From that eight, Becky Waller, Judith Carr, Laura Forrest, Karen Walker and cox Rachael Haycock joined with four of the club’s most experienced men and took gold in the mixed D eight.

The other member of the women’s eight was Jenny Taylor.

She was in the winning C Novice quad with Kapernaros, Walker and Mary Miller, and also had solo success in the C Novice single.

Brothers Ian and Michael Wilkinson came first and second in the D Novice singles and then joined forces to take silver in the double scull.

City of Oxford and Abingdon again combined successfully to win the mixed D quad.

City’s half of the crew, Mary Murray and Nick Stargardt also took gold in their mixed double ahead of the Abingdon duo, Karen Roberts and Tim Baker, who had to be content with silver.

Falcon RC’s only medal for the women’s B novice quad was a gold.

Oxford Academicals’ squad came away with four wins – for their women in the A eight, the A IM3 coxed four and novice single Sonia De Munari and for the men in the B IM3 quad.

Meanwhile, City of Oxford recorded three victories at the Marlow Town Regatta on the Thames.

Natalie Morgan took the WIM3 single, while there was more success for Caitlin Donaldson and Elise Stretton in both the WJ14 and J15 double sculls.

Other than Abingdon’s victory in the Masters C/D double scull and Falcon’s single victory for their novice quad, the remainder of the wins were for junior crews.

Abingdon’s girls coxed quadruple sculls crew of Ruth Sykes, Holly Dunmore, Gabriella Millard, Imogen Almond, and Michaela Giachino were victorious and happy to receive their trophies from Sir Steve Redgrave.

The same crew also triumphed in the WJ15 coxed quads at the two-day Reading Amateur Regatta.

City of Oxford boys’ J16 quad of Will Rogers, Tom Placidi, Joel Bulivant and Robby Crowther were also successful, while their senior men took away the IM3 eights trophy.

Wallingford had wins from the WJ16 quad and the WJ14 double.

This weekend, Headington and St Edward’s Schools plus local clubs will race at the Henley Women’s Regatta.
