A calamitous collapse when in with a good chance of victory led to Aston Rowant losing by 62 runs in their Division 2 match at home to Datchet on Saturday.

Chasing a victory target of 227, Rowant were going well at 148-4 in reply with plenty of overs left.

But the dismissal of Damian Shirazi for 56 led to Rowant losing their last six wickets for just ten runs to be all out for 158.

The result leaves them rooted to the foot of the table, still looking for their first victory.

The day had begun well for the hosts, who took two early wickets through Tom Needham after they chose to field first.

When Andrew Dyer dismissed the aggressive Steve Naylor, who made 47 from 37 balls, Datchet were 87-3.

With Richard Cook taking 3-29 in 9.3 overs, Rowant kept their visitors’ innings in check, while Shirazi conceded only 13 runs in his six overs.

Datchet were eventually all out for 226 in the 50th over.

Rowant openers Tim Morgan and Cook lasted three balls between them as both fell to Gareth Harte.

But Shirazi and skipper Josh Smith (46) put them back on track with a stand of 88.

Chris Watling and Dan Matthews lent good support, but the innings collapsed to the bowling of Harry Stephens, who took 6-34.
