Otto The Great bounced back to winning ways at the Kimblewick Hunt meeting at Kingston Blount, near Chinnor.

Sent off the 7-1 outsider of four in the men’s open, the seven-year old, trained by James Henderson at Buscot Park, near Faringdon, and ridden by his son, Fred, went clear after the third-last fence to beat Patsy Finnegan by five lengths.

Otto The Great had won his penultimate start at Lockinge on Easter Monday, before finishing a disappointing third at Garthorpe.

Fred said: “He just gargled coming up the hill and that was a bit scary, but he was absolutely fine today.

“I think that will be his last run this season, but it’s a great note to go out on.”

Dabinett Moon landed her fourth success of the season in the intermediate race for Chipping Norton trainer Fran Marriott.

After the seven-year-old mare came home three lengths clear of Po Valley under Claire Hart, Fran, who owns the 5-2 shot with her husband, Christopher, said: “Wasn’t she a good girl today?.

“We were highly excited after last year’s run at Mollington when everything went wrong and thought if she won one we would be more than happy.”

Dabinett Moon could now go for the Subaru Restricted Series Final at Stratford on Friday, May 29.

Aston Rowant handler Alan Hill was out of luck with his string of runners, before Ravethebrave justified 1-7 favouritism with an easy 12 lengths romp in the closing members’ race under his jockey son, Joe.

“I think the one thing that has happened today is that it has shown that we have not got the fitness edge,” reflected the champion trainer. “It has been a frustrating day, but we have had a winner.”

Gina Andrews, the season’s leading lady rider, notched a double on Classic Destiny and Volcan Surprise.

Classic Destiny was recording his third course success when taking the members’ conditions race for Jenny Pidgeon’s Astwell Castle Farm stables, near Brackley, by four lengths from Dream Garden.

Volcan Surprise made the trip from Wymondham, Norfolk, worthwhile for trainer Caroline Fryer with a six-lengths verdict over Done A Runner in the ladies’ open.

Merrydown Vintage, Guildford trainer Ray Fielder’s only horse, benefitted from a positive frontrunning ride from Phil York to take the opening restricted race by four lengths from Blue Benny.

And May The First opened her account for Heather Kemp, who trains at Adstone, near Towcester, by landing the open maiden for four to seven-year-olds under Lucy Wheeler.
