Joe Skarz has become the first out-of-contract Oxford United player to resolve his future by signing a new long-term deal.

The left back, who joined in January after being released by Rotherham United, has agreed a three-year contract.

Skarz, 25, made his debut in the 2-0 win at Stevenage and started all but one of the U’s final 19 games in Sky Bet League Two.

He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club and am really looking forward to next season.

“The board and the manager are very ambitious and have big plans for the club and I want to play a part in that.

“Everyone, from the players to the fans, has made me feel very welcome, and we ended the season so positively that I can’t wait to get back for pre-season and playing again.”

Skarz was on Michael Appleton’s wish-list for the summer, so he was thrilled United were able to bring him in ahead of schedule in January.

And the defender, who experienced success with Bury and Rotherham, has impressed the head coach since arriving.

He said: “Joe is an excellent defender and a great pro to have around the club.

“He has won promotion from this league, and the one above, and his experience will be a massive plus for us next season.

“There was a lot of interest from other clubs, but it speaks volumes for Oxford United that he has seen what we are starting to build here and wants to be involved.”

It is the first confirmed decision to emerge from the club since the season ended with a 1-0 win at Newport County last Saturday.

The full retained list was expected to be released earlier this week, but the U’s intend to release the details only once all discussions are concluded.

The Oxford Mail understands talks are ongoing with at least one player, which could see the news delayed until after the weekend.

Work also goes on to clinch the first signing of the summer – and they are believed to be closing in on midfielder Liam Sercombe.

The 25-year-old, who has spent his entire career at Exeter City, has been linked with several clubs but the U’s look set to be at the front of the queue.
