Wantage Town’s brave resistance was finally broken in injury time as Wimborne Town stole a 1-0 win in Saturday’s Division 1 South & West game at Alfredian Park.
Some fine saves from keeper Gareth Tucker and dogged defending looked like earning the hosts a draw.
But two minutes into injury time, the Magpies sent a long throw into the Wantage six-yard area.
With the home defence caught napping, Wimborne’s Mark Gamble headed into the back of the net.
Most of the action came in the second half.
Gamble was denied as Tucker used his legs to keep his shot out.
Then Wantage defender James Glover threw himself in front of the ball to block Franklyn Clarke’s goalbound effort.
Wantage’s best chance came in the 75th minute when Sam Barder sent a great ball through to Ben Whitehead, but shot wide.
Wantage Tn: Tucker, Harper, Hulbert-Thomas, Cattell, Glover, Jones, Barder, Johns, Whitehead, Bruce (Haist 78), Bayliss (Roberts 68). Subs not used: I Lovegrove, Lee, Barton.
Attendance: 91.
